Continuation of The Need to Listen to your mother
Later that day, the twin girls were outside playing hopscotch when they saw their friends going to the stream. Amongst the girls was Nonye, Ifeomas closest friend as a matter of fact Nonye was the only girl who could differentiate between Ifeoma and Chioma from their voices. She could tell Chioma from ifeoma. She and ifeoma are very close friends because they loved to swim. Nonye was believed to be the best swimmer amongst the girls and this was usually refered to as a Fish and she prided herself on that.
Aren't you girls coming to the stream to wash your dirty clothes before the festival? Nonye asked when she saw them playing
"No, we are not going to the stream," Chioma said in her usual polite tone.
"WHY? every bit and girl in this community will be at the stream today and after washing, we will swim, Nonye said.
Ifeoma wondered why their mum had decided to spoil the day for them. She immediately began to suspect that their mother had only tried to dissuade them from going to the stream by telling them the ridiculous story of the stream taking girl's lives.
She turned to her sister, I think we should follow them to the stream and have fun"
Chioma was surprised at her "Mother said we shouldn't go that if we do it will only mean disobeying her" she said.
"Mother will never know that we went, Ifeoma said.
Why would your mother tell you not to go to the stream when all the children in this community will be there to wash and play, swimming and enjoying themselves? Nonye asked with a baffled face.
Ifeoma was sad their mother had told them not to go to the stream and Chioma was not willing to go to the stream either.
"I don't even understand, she said that when she was a girl, girls didn't go to the stream around the time of the festival, that the girls usually died in the stream during this s time" ifeoma replied.
Which stream? Another girl called Uloma interrupted
This same stream, Ifeoma said.
Nonye laughed, "Maybe girls if those days couldn't swim and try drowned in the stream. We are swimmers and for goodness sake, that stream is to shallow to drown anyone, she said. Well our mother said we should not go, so we are not going. We will stay at home and play till evening when we are tired we go home. Chioma replied.

"But mother will not know if we went to the stream. We will come back quickly" ifeoma said convincingly.
"I will not go anywhere because I don't want to disobey mum. Remember what mum said that disobedience has a high price that you may not be able to pay. Chioma said.
" It is a shame that you girls will not have fun like the rest of us, Nonye added, Why didn't my own mother tell me about such a thing if it was true? I remember that you two have been in the stream around this period in previous years, did anything happen?
Ifeoma thought it was a good point to use to persuade her sister, you see? Their mothers were also girls in this community the time mother was a girl, why didn't their mothers tell them about such a thing.. she argued.
"Ifeoma, I cannot disobey mum; and I will not advice you do so, if we don't go to the stream we will not die" Chioma said seriously. That frustrated Ifeoma so much.
